Handling Linen

Used linen should be handled carefully to avoid spreading infectious agents into the environment or onto your clothes. Follow essential work practices to ensure safety and hygiene.

Golden Rules for Handling Linen

  1. Follow Policies:
    • Adhere to your organisation’s linen handling policy.
  2. Protective Gear:
    • Wear gloves and a disposable gown/apron when handling linen from residents or clients with infections (e.g., multi-resistant organisms).
  3. Linen Collection:
    • Bring the laundry basket to the bedside and place linen directly into the basket.
    • Place linen soiled with blood, urine, or other body fluids into leak-proof laundry bags. Avoid carrying soiled linen.
  4. Avoid Sorting:
    • Do not sort or rinse used linen in resident-care areas.
  5. Hand Hygiene:
    • Perform hand hygiene after handling linen.
  6. Storage:
    • Store clean linen in a clean, dry place, separate from used linen.

Transporting Residents or Clients

When transferring residents within or between facilities, or transporting clients, take care to reduce the risk of spreading infection.
