COVID-19 Cases Resurgence: Preparing for Another Wave of Infections

COVID-19 on the Rise: Taking Precautions for a Safe Festive Season

Although the exact number of COVID-19 cases is uncertain due to changes in testing protocols, indicators such as sewage surveillance data, ED presentations, hospitalizations, and aged care outbreaks suggest a resurgence of the virus.

The Hunter New England Local Health District has observed an upward trend in viral fragments in sewage surveillance, particularly in the Burwood catchment area, which includes Newcastle City and surrounding suburbs. Additionally, COVID-19-related hospital admissions have nearly doubled compared to July, and outbreaks in aged care facilities have increased.

While the predominant variant, EG.5, doesn’t appear to cause more severe illness than previous strains, the new wave is expected to peak in December, coinciding with the festive season.

Precautionary measures remain crucial to protect ourselves and our loved ones:

  1. Reinforce hand hygiene: Hand washing or using hand sanitizer should be a regular practice, even beyond lockdowns and public health orders.
  2. Opt for outdoor gatherings: Minimize virus transmission by favoring outdoor gatherings over enclosed spaces.
  3. Stay home when unwell: If you experience cold or flu symptoms, avoid spreading the virus by staying home, even if you don’t suspect COVID-19.
  4. Protect vulnerable individuals: When visiting loved ones in hospitals or aged care facilities, test yourself beforehand, wear a mask if requested, and avoid visiting if you feel unwell.
  5. Seek preventive measures for high-risk individuals: Individuals at higher risk of severe illness should consult their GP about a plan that may include testing and antiviral access.
  6. Consider a booster dose: If you are over 65 or at higher risk of severe illness and it has been six months since your last dose, consider getting a COVID-19 booster.

Vaccination remains our most effective defense against severe COVID-19. While doubts persist among some, the safety and efficacy of vaccines have been extensively demonstrated.

Remember, living with COVID-19 doesn’t mean we have to facilitate its spread. By adopting these simple precautions, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones, ensuring a safe and enjoyable festive season.
