Donning and Doffing PPE: A Crucial Step in Infection Control

Proper donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a cornerstone of infection prevention and control. To ensure maximum protection, healthcare workers must adhere to strict guidelines.

Donning refers to the process of putting on PPE, while doffing is the removal of PPE. It is essential to complete the entire donning process before entering the patient’s area. Once patient care begins, any adjustments to PPE can compromise its effectiveness and increase the risk of contamination.  

If the PPE becomes soiled, damaged, or otherwise compromised during patient care, it is crucial to immediately exit the patient’s room and proceed to a designated doffing area for evaluation. This prevents the spread of pathogens and protects both healthcare workers and patients.  

By strictly following donning and doffing procedures, healthcare facilities can significantly reduce the risk of infection transmission and create a safer environment for everyone involved.
