Rapid Tests at Your Fingertips: Saliva vs. Nasal Swab

Forget waiting in line for a PCR test. Rapid antigen tests (RATs) offer a convenient alternative: fast, easy-to-use, and capable of detecting COVID-19 early, even without symptoms. While not as accurate as PCR tests, RATs provide results within minutes at home.

Here’s how these two RAT options differ:

  • Nasal Swab: Requires inserting a swab a short distance into your nostril and swirling for 15 seconds. After placing it in a solution, read the results in 10-15 minutes.
  • Saliva Test: Simply collect saliva under or near your tongue, then transfer it to the test kit. Results appear within 15 minutes.

Recent research suggests saliva tests might be more effective in detecting the Omicron variant compared to nasal swabs, showing 100% agreement with PCR tests.

So, which one to choose?

While getting a PCR after a positive RAT is recommended, especially with close contact, the choice between nasal and saliva depends on:

  • Health Requirements: Some situations might require specific test types.
  • Personal Preference: Saliva tests are generally considered less invasive.
